TAI CHI is a system of exercise, which comes from traditional Chinese medicine and martial arts. It is taught in this country primarily for promoting better health, although its roots are in martial arts. The movements of tai chi are flowing, continuous and smooth, whether preformed at slow tempo or fast. The emphasis in either is for the physical body to work as a whole, motivated by the mind's intention and moved by the body's energy. This feeling might best be exemplified by the energy expressed in reaching out to shake a friends' hand: mind, heart and body all move together to make the gesture happen. Tai chi is usually taught in "forms" or "sets" which are choreographed sequences from 24 to 108 movements. In this class we will work with basics movements, and groups of movements, rather than memorizing an entire form. We will emphasize principles of structure and movement and supplement the form with exercises aimed at developing these principles.
MINDFUL RESILIENCE Learn a collection of mind-body practices to help you breathe easy, focus clearly, move freely, rest deeply and remember gratitude. This class is geared towards those who are suffering from PTSD, chronic anxiety and depression. Yoga does not cure PTSD. However, yoga therapy has been found to help sleep, improve concentration and focused thinking, manage anger and depression more easily, and find comfort in your own skin. Mental health and addiction treatment providers find that mindfully practiced yoga provides their patients with relief from symptoms, as well as the self-regulation skills needed to engage in evidence-based trauma-processing therapies. Yoga may not cure PSTD, yet Veterans and active duty individuals find these practices to be a significant part of their healing. Class sizes are kept small.
